Implementation

In a kindergarten classroom, I would implement this plan over the course of one school semester. I would make sure it is included within the daily literacy block.

The overall goal is to help students see themselves as real writers and to know their ideas/work is meaningful to more than just themselves, while also maintaining print awareness, phonemic understanding, vocabulary, and storytelling.

To meet the diverse needs of my students, I would offer multiple ways to express themselves.  I would encourage using google translate for those with language barriers, word cards and digital options for those who need more support, and adding more detail and dialogue for advanced learners.

At the start of the semester, as I introduce writing for purpose, I would have students engage in interactive writing experiences. We would read mentor texts, tell stories aloud, and draw illustrations that go along with these stories. This helps students build confidence and connect spoken and written language.

Over time, as students begin to feel more comfortable with independent writing, I will start to introduce the resources on this site. I will start with Writer's workshop sessions so students can truly write about things that are important to them in the correct way.

Once students feel good about their writing skills, I will then introduce the act of publishing their work. I will make sure to inform them of all the ways they can do it, how it can help, and why it's fun.

Throughout this entire process, I will be assessing and analyzing student writing. I will be able to tell which students need what supports, which ones benefit from publishing their writing, and which students have mastered it all.

By the end of the year, my goal is for every child to see themselves as an author who is more than capable of creating fantastic literature pieces.
